Malin Campbell, The Watershed (2015)


Campbell works in mixed media, primarily surface design on silk.  She has been active in fiber arts since 1979, moving from art quilting and garment design to whole cloth textile works.  She has a thorough knowledge of fabric construction and has taught workshops in spinning, weaving, silk fusion, and dyeing to various fiber arts guilds.  She travels often and photography has become a major step in composition, especially in her digitally printed fabric.

She has explored design theory and surface design techniques in workshops with leading artists including: Jane Dunnewold’s Master Class, Elin Noble, Bob Adams, Claire Benn, Rosalie Dace, and Jan Myers-Newberry.

Campbell has lived all over the US and resides now in Anchorage, Alaska.

Artist’s Statement

I am interested in line, shape and color, interpreting what I see into paper or cloth.  As I travel, much of what I happen upon in the world directly affects the composition of my work.  I appreciate the integration of manufactured forms with organic elements and this connection is often expressed in abstract pieces by the use of sharpness and angularity with rounded or amorphous forms.  I enjoy the analysis and execution of these pieces though they are sometimes far from where I started.

Another visual element that I try to express is the lines and spaces in nature formed by the action of wind, water and gravity.  These lines reflect the fluidity and motion of the forces that shaped them and speak to the universal human observation of the world. It gives a great deal of pleasure to the eye and satisfaction to the mind to find the same lines and forms at the bottom of the Grand Canyon as those found in a cave under a glacier or the same sculptured stone in the low desert as on a mountain in the Alaska Range.  This motion and sometimes emotion in my work are shown though the relationship and size of lines and shapes as they are placed…with some variety of balance but not necessarily with harmony…into an integrated whole.  It is an ongoing challenge to interpret any of these forms into a work that gives the same satisfaction.
